The last in the series of Carling Homecoming gigs for 2003 featured the biggest success story to happen in the UK for a long, long time - The Darkness. They took the UKs most exciting rock band back to play an exclusive one-off gig at the venue that marked the turning point in their career. Back in April this year, The Darkness were booked to play at the Mean Fiddler. Aside from the fact that they had an awesome array of insanely catchy rock anthems up their sleeves, the bands reputation for incredible showmanship was the thing that really set them apart from the rest and as rumours started to spread, tickets became so in demand that the gig had to be moved to The Astoria. That night they played a now-legendary set to a totally sold out venue leaving hundreds of fans in the streets outside unable to get in - not bad for a little known band that hadnt even got into the top 40 yet! To celebrate the seven months of madness that followed, which culminated in The Darkness debut album reaching double platinum status, we brought The Darkness back to play an intimate one-off Carling Homecoming gig at The Astoria. The gig was an awesome display of sonic power with Justin Hawkins proving exactly why hes earned the reputation of being one of the best frontman in rock. Not only did the band blast through all their hits like I Believe In A Thing Called Love, Growing On Me and Get Your Hands Off My Woman, but the fans also got to hear the first ever play of The Darkness soon to be legendary Christmas single, (Christmas Time) Dont Let The Bells End complete with school choir and fake snow.
